How does a minimalist find their edge?
When it comes to my personal style, I am a minimalist, but with a love of the theatrical and devotion to dandyism. That might seem like a contradiction, but it means that I like clean lines, mostly in black and uncomplicated patterns if any. I like my minimalism with a little edge. For some people minimalism is about finding a personal uniform that makes dressing less complicated, for some, it is about disappearing. However, for some it is developing a cool, stark canvas to better display the details of our choices: the textures and cuts of our clothes, the unique ways we put things together. For those like me that dread a capsule collection and love to lose ourselves in being our own creative project day-to-day. I look to Catherine Baba and Lily Gatins as fashion inspirations as much as the striped back looks of Kate Lanphear or devotees of The Row.
How do I blend their sartorial excess with my quest for
simple elegance?
Step one: embrace the monochromatic! An all or predominantly
black, white, or even goldenrod outfit will offer a chic place from which to
start building your look.
Step two: Choose unique cuts and details. Find pants
with a wrap waist, sweaters with an unusual weave pattern. A suit with a bold
structure.
Step three: Think about the textures of fabrics and
how they meld or contrast with each other.
Step four: Fall in love and be brave enough to wear
startling or at least highly notable accessories.
Step five: Think up unique ways to wear pieces or to
combine them overall.
Step six: Do not fear statement pieces.
